Long Words and a Short Temper

I can’t eat eggs. Well, of course I can eat eggs… I just don’t get to keep them for very long if I do. Sorry, was that too much information?Cluck!

Some years ago, on holiday with then BF in Greece, I finally worked out what it was that had been making me ill for some years. The Greek village we were staying in was unable to provide fresh eggs very often, so I went eggless for several days before finally laying (sorry!) my hands on an omelet. Since my body reacted in particular ways in a pattern that matched the egg-availability, I finally twigged. Since then I have lived a largely eggless life, much to my chagrin (gods I love eggs) and the annoyance of my friends and family who already found feeding a veggie tough enough.

The thing about food intolerances that come out of nowhere is… sometimes they disappear likewise. So today, with no appointments and nowhere to go, I decided the time had come to explore the possibility of eggs now being more acceptable.  I strolled across the square to The Veg Box and bought half-a-dozen free range eggs. I strolled back, made toast, scrambled some eggs and happily scoffed. Oh joy. Ye gods, did I mention I like eggs? These are cracking (oops) eggs. The come from http://www.rosedowneggs.co.uk/ via my greengrocer, and are rich and tasty.

A shame then that shortly after enjoying my lunch my skin began to prickle, my face became hot & clammy, and a queasiness began which is with me now. Bugger. So it seems that much as I love eggs, they still don’t appear to be very fond of me. How inconsiderate, when I’m such a vocal supporter of humane-farming for chickens, and am inclined to bang on rather tediously about the horrors of battery farming. Sod’s law rules supreme, and Sod is a chicken with a sense of humour.

So 2010 will again be an eggless year for me. But if you are looking forward to tucking into scrambled on toast, or boiled with soldiers at regular intervals, please eat an extra one for me… and make sure it’s free range. Thanks!
